Paper "Fireworks" July 4th Craft

These "fireworks" pencil toppers look great bunched together so you can use several together for an arrangement for your July 4th table. They can be a fun favor for a July 4th party.

These are done similar to fringe flowers if any of you have ever done those. On fringe flowers if you do layers, you usually do each a different size but on these pencil toppers I did each layer the same size because I wanted them to look more like a "firework" than a flower.

I did my "fireworks" in a couple different shades of reds and blues just to see what I liked better. I did Pacific Point and Riding Hood Red - our current In Colors and I did some in Night of Navy and Real Red. I ended up liking the Navy shade best--more like the flag:)

To start with you will need some patriotic pencils. I found mine in the Dollar Spot bins at Target. You will need red, white, and blue card stock cut into 4 1/2 by 2 inch pieces. One of each color for each pencil topper. You will also need Sticky Strip, adhesive runner (SNAIL), and ribbon.

Cut each piece of card stock into fringe strips up to about 1/4 or so from the edge, being careful not to cut clear through.

Do this for each color of cardstock pieces (4 1/2 x 2) for each "firework" pencil topper you plan on making.

Prepare the pencils by adding strips of Sicky Strip to about an inch of the pencil top starting at the metal piece under the eraser.

After you have all your supplies together, you have cut out all your card stock pieces, and prepared your pencils with Sticky Strip, begin each topper by removing the Sticky Strip covering.

Run the adhesive (SNAIL) along the side of the cardstock that isn't cut through. Start wrapping this around the top of the metal part of the pencil as shown. (Fringes pointing upward)

Contine wrapping the entire piece of cardstock around the pencil pressing to adhere the adhesive.

Start the next layer just below the first and finish that layer.

You will end up with something looking like the photo.

Pull down the layers gently to make your "fireworks". I used a pencil and curled the fringes under slightly. You may need to play with it a little with your fingers to get it to look like you want it. Add some ribbon underneath your layers for a finished look and embellishment.
