Give me More of Jesus

Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.  Psalm 73:25

Have you ever noticed how we want and expect more of things? Manufacturers always add that contians "more" because they know we will buy it.  We want more channels on TV, more options, more gigabites.

People always want more material things.  The world has an obsession with wanting more.

When it comes to our spiritual lives though, do we want more?  Do we go after it to the degreee that we do material things?   I've come to the conclusion I need to live a little simpler but I sure am in need of some more of Jesus.

I was reading through that passage in Mark 6 where Jesus was with the disciples.  The disciples had been out teaching and Jesus wanted them to go and rest.

And he said unto them, Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.

And they departed into a desert place by ship privately.
Mark 6:31,32

In the next verse it tells us that when the people saw Jesus and saw how he was leaving in the boat, they beat him to where He was going.  The verse says, they "outwent" Jesus.

And the people saw them departing, and many knew him, and ran afoot thither out of all cities, and outwent them, and came together unto him.  Mark 6:33

These people wanted more of Jesus.  They were there waiting for Him. I think maybe we all should try to "outwent" Jesus.  You know, meet Him in the morning and be there waiting for what He has for us in His Word.

We see all through the Gospels, people following Jesus.   I wonder how many of us follow Him closely and really want to be up close to Him.  There are so many areas I need more of Jesus in.

More of His Compassion

First off, I need more of the compassion that Jesus has.  Look how he reacted when He saw the people waiting for Him in that passage of Mark.

And Jesus, when he came out, saw much people, and was moved with compassion toward them, because they were as sheep not having a shepherd: and he began to teach them many things.  Mark 6:34

I know a lot of us have compassion but are we really "moved" with it. That's the kind of compassion Jesus had.  He cared and was concerned for these people's souls.   When we have this kind of compassion it "moves" us.  It spurs us on to action.

Look what Jesus did in the last part of that verse when He was moved with compassion.  He taught the people.

...and he began to teach them many things.

I want to see souls like Jesus did and be moved with the compassion of Jesus to reach out to others.

More of His Word

Next, I want more of Jesus' Word. In this passage of Mark, the people wanted to hear what Jesus had to say.  They sat and listened and it must have been for quite awhile. Look in verse 35 what it says,

And when the day was now far spent, his disciples came unto him, and said, This is a desert place, and now the time is far passed. Send them away, that they may go into the country round about, and into the villages, and buy themselves bread: for they have nothing to eat.  Mark 6:35

The day was spent.  The day was gone.  I know I don't spend as much time in God's Word as I should. I want more of it.  I need more of it.  These people were willing to sit for a while.

They even sat without eating for a while because after the disciples said this, this is where Jesus feeds those same people with those fish and loaves.

I'm sure we all have times where we cut the reading of our Bibles a lot shorter than we need to.  We always think we have something else we need to start doing whether it's clean the house or get dinner started.

I know I need to schedule in reading my Bible more.  I need to make time to dig into the Word and to really just sit for a while and soak it in.   Just sit and forget about what is going on about me for a little while in order to spend more time in the Word.

More of His Healing

I could really use some of Jesus' healing.  Jesus went around healing the sick.   It was a focal point of His earthly ministry.  He healed the blind, made the lame walk again, and healed the lepers.

I could use some of that physical healing but one of the things Jesus does is heal us emotionally.  He heals those brokenhearted people.

I love that passage where Jesus heals the man in the graveyard.  The man that is possessed.   After Jesus relieved the man of being possessed, the man sat down in his right mind.

And they come to Jesus, and see him that was possessed with the devil, and had the legion, sitting, and clothed, and in his right mind: and they were afraid.  Mark 5:15

When I focus on Christ my whole body is just in a better mindset.  Jesus has the capacity to help us in that way.   I know I need more of that.  When I give my burdens over to the Lord, I get that peace and calm.

When I'm not living close to Christ by praying and reading His Word as I should, I feel like I get all out of whack physically and emotionally.    I need to give all those broken things over to the Lord.  I need Jesus to keep me balanced.

More of His Love

Finally, I need more of the love of Jesus.  When we look at Jesus' earthly ministry, we see how He personified love.  He showed love to the poor.   He showed love to the weak.   He showed love to the sick.  He showed love to the unloving.

His love for all these people and for us is unconditional love and we are supposed to love with that kind of love.

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.  John 13:34

We are to love "as I have loved you".   We are to love like Jesus did. Jesus even tells us in His Word that love is how others are going to know us as Christians.

I definitely need more of Jesus' love in my life so I can show that love to others.  If we love someone we talk to them and I know I can't show the love of Christ more if I don't spend more time with Him.

Conclusion:

When we look through the gospels we see that crowds were always around Jesus getting up close, listening to His teaching, taking in all He had to say and do.  We see in a couple passages where it says the people "pressed" on Jesus.   They were getting as close as they could.

And it came to pass, that, as the people pressed upon him to hear the word of God, he stood by the lake of Gennesaret.  Luke 5:1

For he had healed many; insomuch that they pressed upon him for to touch him, as many as had plagues.  Mark 3:10

I know I need to do that to get more of Jesus.  I need to press in and get close.   I need to spend time in His word and prayer.  It all boils down to getting closer and really desiring the Lord.

Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee.   Psalm 73:25

So, do you want more of Jesus?
