Stamping On A Budget: Where To Start

Stamping With Stampin' Up! On A Budget

Do you have questions about what to purchase in order to begin making cards and small paper crafting gifts for friends and family? Start with the basics.

As you are learning to stamp, you don't need all the bells and whistles. Order some things that will help you learn the basic stamping techniques.

After you begin and you see something new you want to try, just invest in the products for that as you go along and as it fits into your budget. Pretty soon you will have a well stocked supply of products in order to do a variety of projects.

Here's my suggestions of Stampin' Up! products for you if you are wanting to learn to stamp to make cards or even gift tags for gift giving.

    • Whisper White Card stock (Contains 40 Sheets)
You can stamp your images on this and cut your stamped images out in shapes or squares for your projects. Just bear in mind that the Whisper White from Stampin' Up! is a lighter weight card stock and so you will need some of the other options of card stock for card bases.

    • Assorted Pack of Card stock (Contains 36 Sheets, 3 of each color)
Stampin' Up has several color families to choose from.
With this you can make great bases to cards or paper crafts. You can get two 5 1/2 by 4 1/4 cards out of each 8 1/2 by 11 sheet.

    • Scissors
You will need a good pair of scissors for cutting your paper. I do most of my cutting with the Paper Snips. If you do much with ribbon, a good pair of shears will come in handy as well. I reserve my Craft & Paper Scissors for cutting ribbon.

    • Paper Cutter
If you want your cards and projects to look professional, you will want to invest in a good table top paper cutter. It's a must for cutting out your basic card shapes.

    • Classic Black Stamp Pad
With this you can stamp your images and wording. If you like filling in images, you will need to purchase other colors. You can purchase your stamp pads a few at a time or Stampin' Up has collections of "Ink Spots" which come in the various color families. Ink markers are available as well. The markers are available individually or in sets.

    • One or Two DSP Packs (Designer Series Paper)
There are 6 designs in the Stampin Up! sets with coordinating colors and patterns. If you've chosen a color family of card stock, choose something in DSP to coordinate. In the Idea & Catalog, Stampin' Up offers color suggestions under each DSP description so if you are not good with choosing color combinations, the work is already done for you. I suggest just one or two DSP packs if you are starting out but as you enjoy your hobby and begin expanding you projects, you will want to invest into more.

    • Ribbon
Ribbon in a few shades in the color family that you have chosen will be a great asset to you as you make your projects. You may already have some ribbon on hand that you can use. One great thing about the Stampin' Up! ribbon is that the colors coordinate exactly with the colors of the Stampin' Up! Card stock and DSP.  Ribbon, like other things is another product you can build a supply of as you expand your hobby.

    • Adhesive
You will of course need some type of glue or adhesive. I use the SNAIL® Adhesive for most of my projects.

    • Dimensionals/Foam Mounts

    • If you are adding embellishments or want some type of dimension with your cards, you will want some of these on-hand. I rarely make anything that I don't use dimensionals on.

    • Envelopes
If you are making cards for family and friends, you will need to have some envelopes on hand. Make sure they are slightly larger than the card size that you are making.

These are just some item suggestions to get you started. You have to decide what type of products you like using and are comfortable with and what type of projects you enjoy creating. Just go on from there. A hobby should be something you enjoy and is fun, not something you stress about the cost of. Order what your budget allows you to over time.

Stampin' Up! also offers Simply Sent Card Sets with everything you need to stamp a certain amount of cards so make sure you check those out as a possibility.
